WCLO's Stan Stricker reports on outcome of Evansville police stand-off

A police stand-off in Evansville ends peacefully.

Police Chief Scott McElroy says the call came in at 10:42 Wednesday morning about an emotionally upset man in a home on Walker Street with access to weapons. McElroy says police, with the help of 9-1-1 dispatchers and a relative, talked to the man by phone for about two hours. He eventually surrendered without incident.

He was taken into custody, and McElroy says charges are being considered.

Honestly it's apparent ....if every who has mental issues we wouldn't have a government ....so if the man didn't kill anyone or cause harm, then no charges should exist . Right ? I think so ... obviously gonna hold him till they make something up ....or they corner him and piss him off .....and then magically he's a cop beater. Sounds a lil dirty to me ....lemme know .

No I don't think abusive. When I read his post again, I think what he is saying is , the police have told him something about this case. Which I have a problem with. As I have been told by these same police that they can't talk about on going cases. This has not made it to his court room yet, I would think this month would be the earliest it could be there, why would they be talking about it.

I was also in a local gas station one morning when the local officer was talking about a case. They had a search warrant for someone's house and evidently found nothing to build a case on, and could not get the guy to admit to anything, so they were mad. The entire thing is just unprofessional.

I also had a officer tell me something a couple years ago, and then tell me recently something else, and I came right out and asked them which time they were lying. Because he does not get it both ways. They lie often to serve their own purposes, and when you catch one doing it and call them on it, they change the subject very quickly.

I think we all know that department is not always as it looks. Like anyone else.

I have only heard good things about the 'professor' in his local position. But when you work with someone its to easy to defend them facts or not.

you are a municipal judge in town. You would have nothing on me. However after seeing the holier than thou attitude I would request a transfer to the Rock County municipal court if ever I had a ticket.

iamqueenb,
How much "training" to you have with the mentally ill when they are carrying several loaded guns threatening to shoot?
I am sure Evansville PD would take any suggestions you have in regards to your vast knowledge of the topic.
I believe there is a little more to the story than the above release indicates.

If it really is a matter of privacy, don't print anything at all. I hope this guy gets the help he needs. Writing half a article as this is, is silly. It's not news its gossip that's all it causes. If someone was truly interested in what was going on that could call E.P.D. and be told its been resolved. No reason to print half a article. Maybe not so much a slow day at Evansville P.D. but the Gazette. And Professor be careful whom you defend, I realize you work closely with them, but you have no clue either. I worked with someone for 10 years and there was accusations for years and I defended this person all the time.. Until she was fired and I found out a lot of things I did not know. I was embarrassed. You may find your self in the same position some day.

But do you know? I don't think so. The one lady who commented on here lives next to the guy, and knows very well.. Better than you. Professor,, you might want to practice what you preach and be quite and not defend the E.P.D. when you don't know either. It could be quite embarrassing for you.

What the hell do you guys think, that the EPD had nothing to do that day, so they picked this house to do a training excercise? The story is necessarily incomplete for privacy reasons. So instead of pretending to know what you are talking about, why not just start from the premise that EPD did what was required of the situation--in a way that everyone lived, and no one was hurt. Some of you would criticize God for taking 7 days to create the world. Diarrhea of the gums and constipation of the brain.

Good grief... what did he do? Pee on a lamp post and tick somebody off? I can just picture it. A whole bunch of Mayberry "Barnys" enjoying the excitement and turning this into a SWAT situation.
Oh Brother....

yep help the man by surrounding his home. Evansville P.D. does not have experience working with the mentally ill.. basic training, and that is not enough. I realize they don't have a lot of excitement in this town so when something happens they really take it over board. No neighbor was in danger, the neighborhood was not in danger. You can talk to any of his neighbors and they will tell you the same. Training, Training, Training.. and yes I have worked with the mentally ill for the last five years. I have seen for myself how the police need more training.. If nothing else so they don't make the situation worse.

Okay, I have to say these comments tend to bother me a little bit. Sometimes people just can't say anything positive. Until you hear the whole story maybe you shouldn't say that he was just a harm to himself and do you people have first hand experience at working with the mentally ill? Do we know why the Evansville PD was dispatched there in the beginning? Let's give the Evansville PD a little bit of credit here of doing a good job handling a difficult situation. The gentleman was taken into custody without anyone getting hurt and hopefully he will get the help that is needed. If someone would have been injured and/or worse killed would you still be making a the comment that he was just a guy having a bad day?

This article looks like a rough draft my daughter would put together for a school report. Why not wait until you can tell the entire story instead of being in such a hurry to get this posted. IF this is all their is to this story it was not worth printing.

I like how they say 'weapons were found in the home.' People are allowed to have weapons in their homes. Hunting rifles, guns, (if licensed), bow and arrows.. etc.. Leave it to Evansville P.D. to be the drama queens. The guy was mentally ill, and a threat to himself. You know he is emotionally unstable , so you surround his house, and block off the neighborhood , yep that would make anyone want to come out. There has got to be more training in dealing with the mentally ill so situations are handled better. I talked with his neighbor and they both said he is a nice guy having a bad day. They were disappointed as well in how this was handled.
